Meet Our Clergy

About our Rabbi

Rabbi Brant Rosen Our Rabbi, Brant Rosen, is a teacher, a counselor, a resource and a friend to our community. Rabbi Rosen is Los Angeles native and graduate of UCLA. He received his rabbinical training and ordination at the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, where he received the Berger Memorial Prize for Practical Rabbinics upon his graduation in 1992. He previously served at Reconstructionist congregations B'nai Havurah (Denver, CO) and Kehillath Israel (Pacific Palisades, CA) before coming to JRC in 1998. Rabbi Rosen has served on numerous Jewish organizational and community boards and currently serves as President of the Reconstructionst Rabbinical Association.
Rabbi Rosen brings to JRC a profound love of Jewish community building and is committed to spiritual, pastoral and intellectual needs of our congregational family. He lives in Evanston with his wife Hallie and their sons Gabriel and Jonah.

A Message from our Rabbi

What kind of congregations does the world need now?

- In a world of increasing individualism and isolation, we need congregations that value human connection;

- In a world that is profoundly broken in too many ways, we need congregations that actively work to make a difference;

-In a world filled with heartbreak and loss, we need congregations that provide us with healing and hope;

-In a world that serves up pat, easy answers, we need congregations that value questioning, seeking and growth;

-In a world where religion is too often forced upon us, we need congregations that nurture the spirit within us.

As the Rabbi of JRC, I feel blessed to be part of a congregation that shares these dreams. If they are yours as well, we invite you to come and help us make them become a reality.

About our Cantor
Photo of Cantor Howard Friedland Howard Friedland began serving as cantorial soloist at JRC in July 1, 2001. He received his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the Goodman School of Drama at DePaul University in 1982. Until July of 2001, he was a free-lance actor, working in theater, film, television, commercials, and radio voice-over. Howard has been a member of JRC since 1989, having served on the Board of Directors and several committees. He began studying hazzanut two years ago with Cantor Cory Winter and is working towards investiture in the Cantorate. Howard is employed full-time by JRC, teaching our B'nai Mitzvah, as well as leading services with Rabbi Rosen and teaching in the Religious School. He lives in Glenview, IL with his wife Terry and children, Hannah Mira and Benjamin.
A Message from our Cantor

When my wife Terry and I were originally looking for a synagogue to join in 1989, we wanted a place that resembled the tightly-knit community and warmth that I had experienced growing up in Springfield, IL. We found such a community in JRC. We quickly became involved. I began leading services and reading Torah at our Shabbat morning minyan which, many years later, fueled my interest in becoming a Cantor. Our services offer a mix of nusach (traditional prayer melody) and contemporary melodies. Services at JRC are not simply a platform for the Rabbi and Cantor. Services here are participatory, providing worshippers with an active role. It is my honor and pleasure to serve a congregation to which my family and I have so many personal ties. This is a rare opportunity, indeed, for any cantor.

(Howard can be reached at the JRC office (847) 328-7678. He can also be reached by email at cantor@jrc-evanston.org.)
