JRC Board Policies Regarding B'nai Mitzvah

Updated 8/10

The B'nai Mitzvah is a congregational event led by the Rabbi and Cantor. The B'nai Mitzvah student participates in this event.

The student is expected to learn cantillation (trope) and to participate in the liturgical parts of the service, read from the Torah scroll, read a Haftarah, and prepare a D'var Torah.

A student must complete a minimum of two years of JRC Religious School prior to the year in which the B'nai Mitzvah service takes place. This requirement is waived for students attending Jewish day schools.

The Religious School Director will complete a competency assessment for all incoming students, fourth grade and over.

If the student needs a significant amount of additional tutoring or resources, the parents/guardians will pay for this cost.

B’nai Mitzvah may occur during congregational Shabbat events. B’nai Mitzvah are only scheduled on Shabbat mornings. Families will be encouraged to share Shabbat morning dates.

Post-B’nai Mitzvah students are expected to complete the 7th grade year of Religious School, as well as continue their education through JRC’s Gesher program for 8th graders and JRC’s Chavayah program for high school students.
