JRC has three opportunities to get involved in choir -- our Adult, Children and Family choirs.
Anyone who enjoys singing can join! Please email us or call the JRC Office at 847-328-7678.
Adult Choir
- Adult Choir rehearses most Thursday evenings from 7:45 pm until 9:30 pm. We hope you'll join us!
- We perform 4 - 6 times a year, for the High Holidays, Multi-Choir Concert, Shabbat Jazz Service, and spring Tish (Shabbat Dinner).
- We typically perform liturgical music, both modern and traditional scores. Compositions and arrangements by Robert Applebaum have been a big part of our repertoire. We occasionally sing South African pieces because they are fun and add a call for peace and a connection to others around the world.
- We were thrilled to perform Cantata - Mishkan Halomot: House of Dreams on April 13, 2008, composed by Robert Applebaum, for the dedication of our new building. Bob has been a long-time JRC choir member. We have been honored to perform many of his pieces over the years, including A Friday Nite Jazz Service, and look forward to continuing to do so. Bob and his wife moved to Palo Alto this year to be closer to family -- we miss you, Bob!
- Our choir has singles, several married couples, a few parents with older children, and one family that is represented by three generations. A few of us have been in the choir for 30 years. We socialize during break time over tea and homemade desserts and enjoy potlucks with choir members and their families.
Children's Choir
- Practice is during Hebrew School on Sunday mornings from 10:45 am - 11:30 am, spanning the last 15 minutes of the early religious school session and the first 15 minutes of the late session.
Family Choir
- Family Choir adds parents' voices to the Children's Choir once a month on Sunday mornings. Dates will be announced.
Director
- The choirs rehearse and perform under the direction of Danny Wallenberg. Danny is an effective teacher and talented musician; he is perceptive, welcoming and supportive. He is a long-time JRC member. In addition to his commitment to the JRC choirs, Danny works for the Chicago Children's Choir and is the conductor of the Music Institute of Chicago Chorale.
- At the Children’s Choir, Danny works in the In-School Chorus Program and the After-School Programs for the Rogers Park and Humboldt Park Neighborhood Choirs. In addition, Mr. Wallenberg is the founder and artistic director of "Zemer Am," the Chicago Jewish Choral Festival.
- A native of Bogotá, Colombia, Mr. Wallenberg earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in choral conducting from the Rubin Academy of Music in Jerusalem and Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah. In Israel Mr. Wallenberg founded several adult and children's choirs, and sang with the "Cameran Singers," a professional choir in Tel Aviv. He has extensive experience conducting collegiate, community, professional, and children's choral groups throughout the world and has many choral arrangements to his name.
