Shabbat Sweet

Shabbat Sweet CD ReleaseCelebrate both Shabbat and the recent release of Billy Kaplan's CD recording of Shabbat Sweet! Billy first shared Shabbat Sweet here at JRC about three years ago, and now, after a successful Kickstarter campaign and over a year in the studio, the recording is complete. Upon listening to the recording, Rabbi Brant said, “Halleluyah and Oh Happy Day! So much gratitude to Billy for giving this sacred gift to the world. Mazel Tov to us all...” and Cantor Howard said, “It’s absolutely beautiful. Beautiful. The arrangements, the harmonies – gorgeous.”

Joining Billy on the bimah will be nearly all the musicians who played on the recording, a band for this night he is calling “The Legendary Sweets.”  These renowned musicians include Alex Koffman, Don Jacobs and Jim Cox (all of the Maxwell Street Klezmer Band), Don Stille, Don Stiernberg, Steve Rashid, Jeff Thomas, and Robert Rashid. JRC’s own Hannah Kaplan and Emma Chanen will once again provide harmonies with Rena Newman as the “Sweet Sisters,” and JRC’s own Jonah Karsh and Sam Frolichstein-Appel will also be adding their musical voices to the celebration.

In respect for Shabbat, CDs will NOT be sold the evening of the service, but you can pre-order CDs to pick up at the celebration here.

This program is sponsored by the David Gassel Music Fund. JRC member David Gassel died in 2009. One of his lifelong passions was music, and he was greatly respected as a talented pianist. In his will, David generously bequeathed this JRC fund in order to live on in his community through music. We hope that we honor David's memory on behalf of his family and friends with this service, and, with your support, many more to come.
